How to access the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) (with Pictures) November 3rd, 2022
The Commonwealth Seniors Health Card might be a fantastic way to save you real money on your essential medicines. We outlined how that works in this article.
In this article we explain in detail how you can get your own CSHC card.
The slower paper approach
You can download the 18 page SA296 paper claim form from the Services Australia website or the easier and faster way, is to do it online. At this stage, online applications require each individual to claim, but the paper version includes a combined claim form for couples.
The online way
This process should take, at most, about an hour to complete, it depends how quick you are at navigating the websites and whether you've already set up some of your online accounts (MyGov, MyGovID and linked Centrelink to the MyGov website).
1. If not already setup on my.gov.au, go to the website and individually, follow the steps to open a myGov account.
2. If Centrelink is not an already linked service, click the link to add Centrelink
2.a You have two options to link Centrelink to your myGov account:
- Obtain a linking code manually by:
- Calling 13 23 07 and select option”1” or,
- Visit a Centrelink Office with identity documents such as passport, drivers license, medicare card etc.
- With a smartphone, download the MyGovID app (this is different to your myGov account) and establish your identity using documents including your passport, drivers license and Medicare card.
3. Once linked, click “Make a claim” and then “Get Started” on the concession cards menu.
3.a Depending on your answers to the questions, you may be required to upload scanned copies of documents to support your claim.
4. If your claim is successful, your card will be available in your phone’s digital wallet via the Centrelink Express Plus App and a hardcopy version will be posted to you.
There you have it, hopefully you're on your way to cheaper medicines!
A top-tip is to look into the seniors discount cards that each State or Territory offers. For some it could mean even better discounts on medicines, for others it might just be a bit of a discount on various licenses.
